Most of you know Dog Man or Captain Underpants, but do you know Dav Pilkey。 He is such a sincere champion for literacy that he not only writes books that kids want to read, he writes books that kids CAN read。 This is one of his emergent reader books and parents will love。 The last three pages are designed to quiz your little reader and start teaching story elements that will be important for kindergarten。
Jennifer,
I received an eARC courtesy of HMH Books for Young Readers via Edelweiss in exchange for my honest review。Simple, sweet and sure to please little ones。

Kaylynn Johnsen,
Cute, easy to read story with extra learning material in the back。
Bethany,
Read for lexile projectLexile: 160While the illustrations are less than stellar (although a Dav Pilkey fan might be able to confirm that they are his style), I loved the comprehension questions at the end for the mature reader to do with the learner!

M。,
It was a good read。
Nam,
The Mad Libs part was fun。 Using a random word generator, I got that the dog had to be murdered though。。。 (Did not like that) It was right that the dog shouldn't eat men though。 These are decent reading practice, but keep in mind that the age says 4-6。 Most likely more challenging for the four side of the age limit。 The Mad Libs part was fun。 Using a random word generator, I got that the dog had to be murdered though。。。 (Did not like that) It was right that the dog shouldn't eat men though。 These are decent reading practice, but keep in mind that the age says 4-6。 Most likely more challenging for the four side of the age limit。 。。。more

Tyler Jones,
It is crucial that when a child is learning to read that they get positive reinforcement, so choosing books that challenge yet don't overwhelm young readers is crucial。 I think this book is a good example of a first-step into reading book that should work well; the sentences are simple and are easily inferred by the illustrations, and the slightly silly ending is a pay-off。 Included are few "skill-building activities" that help children learn how both sentences and stories are structured。 It is crucial that when a child is learning to read that they get positive reinforcement, so choosing books that challenge yet don't overwhelm young readers is crucial。 I think this book is a good example of a first-step into reading book that should work well; the sentences are simple and are easily inferred by the illustrations, and the slightly silly ending is a pay-off。 Included are few "skill-building activities" that help children learn how both sentences and stories are structured。 。。。more

Very good book if you are trying to learn Spanish。
Lisa,
Great activities in the back: dog libs, event order, sentence match to picture in both English and Spanish。

~ from the libraryBIG DOG & LITTLE DOG is a cute series from Dav Pilkey -- well known for his other series, Captain Underpants, Dumb Bunnies, Dragon, Ricky Ricotta。 These BIG/LITTLE DOG books though are at the Kindergarten reading level。 The Lexile number for this book is AD50L and the Accelerated Reader number is 0。8。 The book has only 73 words and bright saturated colors。*you can find reading info on the other Pilkey books here: http://goodbooksforkids-lists。blogspo。。。~This is a really nice bo ~ from the libraryBIG DOG & LITTLE DOG is a cute series from Dav Pilkey -- well known for his other series, Captain Underpants, Dumb Bunnies, Dragon, Ricky Ricotta。 These BIG/LITTLE DOG books though are at the Kindergarten reading level。 The Lexile number for this book is AD50L and the Accelerated Reader number is 0。8。 The book has only 73 words and bright saturated colors。*you can find reading info on the other Pilkey books here: http://goodbooksforkids-lists。blogspo。。。~This is a really nice book and one of the features that is nice about it are the activities at the end。 There are 6 pages of intelligent and fun things for youngsters to do。 There's a maze that will take the dogs to the skunk as well as Fun Facts which adults can read and share。In addition there are pictures which are out of sequence and kids are challenged to put them in the right order。 As well there is a Word Scramble and a Fill-in-the-Blank。As far as the story it's a classic。 Dogs see critter。 Dogs decide it's a cat。 Dogs find out it's not a cat。 And in his trademark way Pilkey throws in a funny twist at the end。 。。。more
Cristy,
This is the story of Big dog and Little dog。 It is told in Spanish and under that it is in English。 This would be a great book for anyone wanting to learn Spanish or English。 I would recommend this for any collection looking for simple stories and text for beginner readers。
Stephanie Tournas,
Spanish/English bilingual text。 One short, declarative sentence per page, in English in Spanish, describes daily life for two dogs, one big and one small。 Pilkey's signature cartoons, with color, are paired with simple language for very beginning readers。 Includes reading level information and "skill building activities"。My one gripe: the "Learning Nouns and Verbs" section at the end seems like kind of a bummer for kids who have just make it through their first book。 Spanish/English bilingual text。 One short, declarative sentence per page, in English in Spanish, describes daily life for two dogs, one big and one small。 Pilkey's signature cartoons, with color, are paired with simple language for very beginning readers。 Includes reading level information and "skill building activities"。My one gripe: the "Learning Nouns and Verbs" section at the end seems like kind of a bummer for kids who have just make it through their first book。 。。。more

Geez, might as well go back to Dick and Jane。 Maybe as a board book for the tiniest it would be mildly diverting, but by the time a child is learning to read, even "Level 1," as this is labeled, they need a meatier story than this。 I had higher hopes for Pilkey。 Geez, might as well go back to Dick and Jane。 Maybe as a board book for the tiniest it would be mildly diverting, but by the time a child is learning to read, even "Level 1," as this is labeled, they need a meatier story than this。 I had higher hopes for Pilkey。 。。。more

Love there books for my rising first grader! Just enough repetition to help her but not allow her to guess。

Crockett,
The big dog/little dogs books were my kids first/favorite stories。 We had them all memorized for a while。

I definitely enjoyed reading Dav Pilkey's Big Dog and Little Dog。 It is newly published in early reader format。 (The book was originally published in 1997。 The end-of-the-book activities are brand new additions to the 2015 edition。) In this early reader title, young readers meet Big Dog and Little Dog。 The good news is that if little ones LOVE reading about Big Dog and Little Dog, this is the first in a series。 There are PLENTY of other books to get them excited--to keep them excited and to keep I definitely enjoyed reading Dav Pilkey's Big Dog and Little Dog。 It is newly published in early reader format。 (The book was originally published in 1997。 The end-of-the-book activities are brand new additions to the 2015 edition。) In this early reader title, young readers meet Big Dog and Little Dog。 The good news is that if little ones LOVE reading about Big Dog and Little Dog, this is the first in a series。 There are PLENTY of other books to get them excited--to keep them excited and to keep them READING。Here is how this one begins, "Big dog and Little Dog are hungry。 Big Dog and Little Dog want food。" My favorite part, I must admit: "Big Dog gets in the big bed。 Little Dog gets in the little bed。 Big Dog is lonely。 Little Dog is lonely, too。" The illustrations tell the rest of the story! I love it because it is simple and straightforward。 And being simple does not in any way prevent it from being clever and funny and A STORY。 The illustrations are bright and bold。 It is a charming book cover to cover。I also appreciated the end-of-the-book activities。 For example, one activity has young readers practice story sequencing and has them retelling the story。 。。。more

So simple, so wonderful。 One of the best narrative fiction series on board。 Big dog is happy。 Highly recommended for ages 1-3。
